Are you hearing or feeling engine sputtering when your car is running? That can be upsetting and worse, it can lead to engine damage over time that is preventable. Here’s what Davis & Clark Auto Repair want you to know.
Problems with the Fuel Pump
When your fuel pump isn’t working properly, that means it might be picking up fuel intermittently. That keeps your car’s engine from getting fuel at the intervals it needs to be receiving it. When that happens, you’re more likely to experience engine sputtering. Eventually, that can even lead to engine damage.
Clogs in the Fuel Filter
The fuel filter is the next step in the process and if it’s clogged, you definitely aren’t getting the right amount of fuel out of the tank and through the fuel lines. Another problem you can run into is that debris starts to make it through the fuel filter and deeper into the engine. Finally it gets to the fuel injectors, and that’s where you can experience another layer of trouble.
Clogs in the Fuel Injectors
Clogs in the fuel injectors keep the fuel from making its way through as the fine mist the engine needs. This can be a big cause of engine sputtering and even of other problems, like misfires in the engine. If any of the debris that is clogging the fuel injectors makes its way through, that’s not great for the engine at all.
Failing Sensors
There are a lot of different sensors throughout your entire car, including in the engine and the exhaust system. These sensors relay all sorts of information back to your car’s onboard computer. The computer then uses that data to make changes to how the engine runs. Without accurate information, the computer can make changes that cause engine sputtering.
Malfunctioning Spark Plugs
Another part of the problem can be your car’s spark plugs or even the spark plug wiring. If the spark plugs are old or worn, they may not fire properly. That then causes your car’s engine to fire at the wrong time or irregularly. You may experience this as sputtering, misfires, or other engine trouble.
