How to Prepare Your Car for a Road Trip

Planning a road trip is exciting but stressful if you don’t prepare your car. A pre-trip inspection is a must! Taking the time to check your vehicle before hitting the open road will ensure you and your passengers have a safe and comfortable journey. Let’s look at how to do your pre-trip car inspection.

Check Your Oil and Other Fluid Levels

First, you should check all the fluid levels in your vehicle, such as oil, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Ensure they are all at the appropriate levels before embarking on your trip. If the levels are low or empty, top them off with fresh fluids or take your car into an auto repair shop for service.

Test Out All of Your Lights

You should also check that all of the lights on your car are in proper working order. This includes headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights, hazard lights, reverse lights, interior dome lights, and more. Ensure all these lights work so other drivers can see you clearly on the roads. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting pulled over by law enforcement or being involved in an accident because someone wasn’t able to see you in time.

Inspect & Replace Worn Tires

Good tires are one of the most critical parts of ensuring your car is ready for a road trip. First, take some time to inspect each tire for signs of wear and tear, such as cracking or bulging walls or uneven tread wear across each tire. If any of these issues are present, replace them with new tires before leaving for your trip. Also, ensure that each tire is inflated to its recommended pressure level, usually found inside each door jamb or in the owner’s manual.

If you plan and take the time to do a thorough pre-trip inspection before hitting the road, then there shouldn’t be any surprises along your journey! Checking all of your fluids, testing out all of the lights on your vehicle, and inspecting/replacing worn tires are simple steps to ensure that you and your passengers will have a safe road trip experience this summer! In addition, if any issues arise during inspections, take your vehicle into an auto repair shop before departing so technicians can immediately diagnose what needs attention!
